Our guide to Surrey's Sportive, the fun and friendly cycling event which involves regular stops for home made cake, nom nom nom.

Whether you’re the fastest person you know on two wheels, or just looking to come and spectate, the Surrey Sportive is an event for everyone. Happening at the state-of-the-art Surrey Sports Park August 14, the event showcases the sport of road cycling exactly as it should be: a few hours of cycling along glorious country roads, with plenty of stops for homemade cake!
Surrey’s friendliest sportive welcomes riders of all abilities and ages to enjoy either the Primo, Venti or Grande routes (all currently under £25) which start between 8am and 9am. The event, sponsored by Cycle Works, praises every cyclist’s efforts by banding the results as either Bronze, Silver or Gold. An automatic podium finish then, for all who sign up. A fantastic atmosphere surrounds the Surrey Sportive throughout the ride each year, with cyclists willing each other up the hills and being applauded by local residents and volunteers.
Organised by Guildford based cyclists, the routes have been designed to make the most of the beauty and challenging hills that the local area has to offer. Three courses have been devised to ensure this event has something to offer cyclists of all abilities. The 119km, 97km and 67km routes meander out from Guildford towards Normandy, and then down towards Dunsfold through the forests of Hascombe, before heading uphill towards Leith Hill and returning to Guildford. So whether you’re a resident of Farnham, Aldershot, Godalming, Cranleigh, Dorking or Guildford, do come and support as cyclists pass by!
The steepest part of the course for cyclists is undoubtedly Tanhurst Lane; an exceptionally tranquil and narrow road which although is officially marked as a 12% incline, feels more like 22%. This road is the steepest ascent to the summit of Leith Hill, which is the highest point on the Greensand Ridgeand and the second highest point in South East England.
After receiving their chip timed results, cyclists will enjoy treatments provided by Optimum Fitness, as well as a variety of free coffees and blended iced drinks provided by Starbucks at the event venue.
Free parking, as well as changing facilities, lockers and showers are available at Surrey Sports Park to all those attending the event. Alternatively, the venue is a short walk from Guildford Train Station, and will be well sign posted from the station on the day.
