Want on-trend summer hair? That means getting the chop, award-winning hairdresser Martha Pountain tells Fiona Adams
Blorange (tones of rose gold and copper), as seen here on our intern Brooke, is all the rage this summer
Martha Pountain has more than 30 years’ experience in the industry, 10 of them spent as Art Director at Sassoon in South Molton Street, in Mayfair. In 2012 she opened her own salon in Hampton Wick and has gone on to be voted one of the most popular hairdressers in the capital. Here she outlines her thoughts for the summer...
Hair trends are getting shorter and shorter. If you are ready to make the transition to short hair, now is the time! These three head-turning cuts will get you thinking.
The Lob is a growing trend in 2017, worn on the shoulders with long choppy layers. Precision cutting and natural minimal styling using Davines Dry texturizer will give your hair a perfect relaxed feel. Use dry texturizer spray with medium hold for an instant full-bodied look. This creates texture with a ruffled effect for a quick restyle without washing your hair. It doesn’t weigh hair down and it is not sticky – a perfecctly natural effect is all you get.
The pixie cut is a textured, layered and choppy style from the jawline; an Audrey Hepburn-inspired gamine look with undercuts to give an edgy appearance, much like the styles Katy Perry and Scarlett Johansson rocked at the Met Ball. Styling tip: use styling creams or waxes to give shine and texture. Oway Shabby Mud creates the perfect look that is low-maintenance and easy to grow out.

The shaggy bob: jaw-length blunt bobs with chunky, choppy layers which are easy to care for and create a cutting-edge look. Use the best sulphate-free shampoos to give your hair a clean, light feel. Davines Dede shampoo and Oway organic shampoos are great and perfect for sensitive scalps.
Don’t forget that, with the better weather here, you can also have fun with colour. Blorange (yes, really) is big! Think rose golds and copper pinks. Pastels – purples, sky blue, lilacs and baby pinks – are also on trend. If blonde is your thing, then light-golden blonde is back in vogue, while brunettes are going bronde with matte golden balayage.

With June heralding the official start of summer, it’s time to invest in a moisturiser for high-performance sun protection.
Exposing your face to harmful UVA and UVB rays is one of the most damaging things you can do to your skin. Not only does it cause premature ageing, but there are a whole host of other nasties in store, including uneven pigmentation (at best) and malignant melanoma at worst.
Most high street moisturisers offer a measly SPF of 15, which is like wearing a plastic bag in a monsoon. Murad White Brilliance Luminous Shield SPF 50 is one of the best products on the market and my go-to choice all year round. It’s light, non-greasy and easily absorbed – you’ll feel as if you’re not wearing anything at all. At £55 it’s a high-end choice, but you can’t put a price on healthy skin.
Hot hair?: To protect your hair, Martha recommends Davines SU Hair Milk, a leave-in protective and softening treatment that also protects hair hydration and colour.
