Ninety paddle boarders travelled from Richmond to Kew Bridge last week in a bid to raise awareness of the plastic problem poisoning our rivers and oceans. Sheengate's Ruth McCann was on the scene to give a board's eye view
Last week ninety paddle boarders took to the river Thames to highlight the problem of plastic pollution in our rivers and I was one of them. We set off from Kew bridge and completed a three hour trip to Richmond bridge, picking up plastic and litter along the way, while another group of 40 volunteers including school children walked down the towpath, also collecting litter.
It was a really great experience with like-minded people and we collected an amazing 200kg of river litter.
The event was run by Be Richmond in association with paddle board company Active360. They plan to make it a yearly event not only in Richmond but all over the UK.
It really is a huge problem and leads to the contamination of our oceans – there is now a gigantic floating trash island in the middle of the Pacific that is twice the size of France!
Let’s hope more people join in next year and help to clean up our rivers.
