In the lovely surroundings and generous acoustic of Holy Trinity Church, this concert explores music from the 16th to the 21st centuries. The great Italian choral tradition of the 16th and 17th centuries is represented by Monteverdi, Victoria, Viadana and Gabrieli – whose brass music, inspired by St. Mark’s in Venice, is also included.
From four hundred years later, both using traditional Latin texts but set in more contemporary musical language, are two works which have become well-established in the repertoire of many choirs – John Rutter’s setting of the Gloria and Guildford Choral’s own Musical Director Jonathan Willcocks’s Magnificat. Both these works combine chorus with brass, percussion and organ and will continue the developing partnership between Guildford Choral and Southern Pro Musica.
