Originally commissioned in the 18th century by the Honourable Charles Hamilton, and put together by renowned grotto maker Joseph Lane, the crystal grotto quickly established itself as a bit of a miracle. It nearly succumbed to dereliction when lead was allegedly removed from the roof to pay for a VE day party but was rescued by a painstaking renovation project.
Lady Lucy Lambert placed the last piece in 2013, completing the crystal grotto as we know it today. If you haven’t been, it’s a must. Rich with heritage and easily mistaken for something out of a fairytale, it’s a national gem right on our doorstep.
