The Savoy Hotel, London’s first luxury hotel, opened beside the Thames in 1889. With the addition of the Strand building in 1903 and subsequent redecoration, the hotel combines the best of Edwardian and Art Deco heritage.
FInd a theme
“I particularly love the monochrome marble of the hotel’s lobby and bathrooms and it's this striking use of black and white I wanted to use in my home...”
Inspire Yourself
“Having once worked at The Savoy Hotel in London, I wanted to lovingly created a guest toilet suitably inspired by the hotel’s ageless elegance"
"Although I now work as an interior designer, hospitality is very much ingrained in who I am and I wanted to create an experience for my guests in my own home..."
Maximise space
- “Embrace creativity and add character to small spaces. Create a lasting impression with bold colours – my forte is in maximising space: it’s a small room with a big personality”
- “I hand-painted the walls to create the black and white stripes, using masking tape to ensure sleek, straight lines. A mirror helps create the impression of space”
Wallpaper: try Arte’s Flamant Les Rayures range, £120 pm; byrequest.london
- Don’t let your flooring detract from the feature walls. Keep to a monochrome floor for glorious effect. Keep the ceiling in white."
Try Sahara Noir or Panda White polished marble, from £169 sq m; byrequest.london.
- “Focus on a feature to inspire a theme – such as the aptly named sink (called 'Savoy') that was here when I moved in"
Novelty towels from the hotel’s collection complement the theme (set of four, £30; shopatthesavoy.com);
- "Also have fun choosing accessories that complement the theme, such as wall features that include an original newspaper article and postcard (right) from 1906”
Style with monochrome towels and Iconic 01’s black scented candle, £39 (below); iconiccandle.com.
