Bob Munro takes a look at the new generation of cyclists hitting the streets of Windsor
Every Saturday afternoon, after the club cyclists have finished their cake, you’ll find the next generation going through their paces deep in Windsor Great Park.
Windsor’s EVO Triathlon Club launched its junior section last year with midweek swimming and running and Saturday cycling training. It now has 35 active 7-14 year old boys and girls (50:50).
On tarmac virtually free of cars, the kids can safely learn bike handling, braking and riding in a group – way before they would ever venture out on the roads – and build up their cycling fitness. The club runs internal competitions and has entered national events, but the accent is on fun in an inclusive environment.
“Our aim is simply to get kids off their backsides and help them get fitter, with our coaches and adult members as role models,” says EVO’s Kevin Wallace, a personal trainer and triathlon coach. “Some juniors enjoy one discipline, so there’s no pressure to swim 20 hours a week, if that’s not your thing.”
All this activity has even encouraged non-triathlete parents to exercise too. Which begs the question, who's the role model now? If that hasn't made you feel guilty enough, below is a photo illustrating just how much better bikes are than cars for congestion on roads.
