Molesey Community Rowing Centre
Stages of completion at Molesey's new Community Rowing Centre, now ready to open
Rowing is the only sport in which Britain has won a gold medal at every Olympics since 1984. Living practically next to the Thames, one of the world's most famous rivers, we enjoy a host of great opportunities and events, like the upcoming Oxford v Cambridge Boat Races.
Molesey Boat Club is at the very forefront of this British sport, working to make rowing accessible for those of all ages and abilities. Their latest development is the Molesey Community Rowing Centre, a 5,000 sq ft building which includes a gym and state-of-the-art rowing tank.
"We've had huge support from local groups like clubs and schools, especially those who cater to children with special needs", said Bill Raspin, Chairman of MBC. "The rowing tank allows groups to practice rowing without needing to be out on the water, which is great for nervous beginners, but also experts in rough weather."
The tank will be available to the public through an online booking system on the MBC website, and will be formally opened on April 3 at 11.30am. Cutting the ribbon will be five-time Olympic gold medallist Sir Steve Redgrave, accompanied by Elmbridge Mayor Jan Fuller and other rowing greats.
MBC Captain and Olympic medallist Moe Sbihi thought it was "particularly fitting" that the Community Rowing Centre would be opened during MBC's 150th Anniversary year. "It's been a tremendous team effort, getting the centre built, and it'll be wonderful to see it all come to life."
