In celebration of International Yoga Day; Bad JuJu Yoga will be putting on a night of punk rock and yoga at Guildford’s alternative community venue The Boileroom June 21
Punk rock and yoga might not seem the most likely of bedfellows, but after a decade of practice in the states, Bad JuJu founder Jo Smith has brought the two together in Guildford to great success.
Whilst many people see yoga and punk being at opposite ends of the spectrum, Jo likes to see it as something that brings balance and moderation into one’s life. Using the music to help students to acknowledge how they feel body and mind, accepting that feeling and then finally letting go through pranayama and relaxation.
Punk Rock Yoga is more than yoga to punk rock, its philosophy is to make yoga accessible to everyone no matter their background, age, size, ethnicity etc. It is an all encompassing yoga that can be enjoyed by anyone wishing to participate, in mind, body and spirit.
In celebration of International Yoga Day; Bad JuJu Yoga is putting on a night of punk rock and yoga at Guildford’s Alternative Community venue The Boileroom.
The night begins with a Punk Rock Yoga workshop for all abilities, focusing on the sun salutation, breathing exercises (known as Pranayama) and meditation, and how to bring these beneficial practices into everyday life.
To continue the summer vibes, the evening will include live performances by some of Guildford’s finest homegrown punk bands, melodic hardcore punks Darko and a rare acoustic performance from reggae punks Tree House Fire.
Vegan and veggie food by local chef Andy Clarke, as well as Cocktails and Mocktails by fresh juice bar Vits+Kicks, will also be available on the night.
"The evening is all about having fun, feeling comfortable and trying something new. Yoga is something a lot of people want to try but because of preconceived ideas of what yoga is, it has put barriers up. You don't have to be flexible, be wearing the latest sports fashion label or know every pose, the workshop is suitable for anyone wishing to have a go. I've made the pricing of the workshop on a sliding scale so purchases operate on an honesty, self assessment basis to make it accessible to anyone wishing to benefit from the workshop. It's really important to me that my students and those who attend my classes or workshops can afford it and feel comfortable in the yoga I teach." Jo Smith
The two-hour workshop starts at 6.15pm with the doors opening for bands, food and drink from 8.30pm. There are three options for tickets for the night:
Workshop (only) £8.50-£17*
Workshop and bands £10-£20*
Bands only £5 otd
