With the Rugby World Cup soon to arrive at Twickenham, many aren't happy about the request from police that pubs close their doors at 10pm
When England faced off against France at Twickenham Stadium earlier this month, it was considered a "practice run" for those administering the Rugby World Cup – a test of their ability to handle the crowds and aftermath of each match.
In the wake of the home team's 19-14 victory it turned out to be a dry run in more ways than one, as the Metropolitan Police made an announcement at the Stadium that local venues would be unavailable after 10pm.
Local publicans who closed their doors early at the request of the police are said to have missed out on the tremendous opportunities offered by an international match, and some expressed concerns that this tactic – reportedly a trial by Richmond Council – will be repeated as the Rugby World Cup begins and crowds pour in from around the world.
It strikes some rugby fans as especially galling, given that, far from restricting their operation, the Home Office gave permission for pubs to stay open even later than usual during the Football World Cup in Brazil last year.
On the other hand, local MP Tania Mathias said that local residents had felt "let down" by the behaviour of the crowd after the Rugby 7s event back in May, when heavy drinking led to scenes of hooliganism.
