Ellen Daniel takes a look at the crazy, dirt-streaked world of obstacle course races across Surrey, with Muddy Races
Miles of mud? Barbed wire? 10 foot walls? This may sound more like a Marines training exercise than a day out, but for thousands across the UK it is all part of a new sports craze.
Whether this sounds like Hell on Earth or the just the sporting challenge you were looking for, obstacle course races or 'mud runs' as they are known have been gaining popularity over recent years.
The concept is simple: competitors choose a from variety of distances (from 5k runs for beginners to the more gruelling 10 mile events) and tackle crazy obstacles along the way. One thing is guaranteed: there will be mud.
However, these are races with a difference, putting 'camaraderie over finisher rankings', an emphasis is firmly placed on team work and socialising, with many competitors running for charity or in teams. For a way of improving fitness that is truly like no other, embrace the mud and take a look at what's coming up in your area.
