Eat right during pregnancy with Surrey Dieticians, says Fiona Adams
These days nutrition is constantly in the news, from the war on sugar to the debate about good fats versus bad. But while I now try to combine healthy eating with a healthy lifestyle, I know that it’s not always easy to find the energy for exercise and home-cooked meals.
However, the one time that you should focus seriously on your health and diet is before and during pregnancy.
When I was expecting my son 17 years ago, my food poison of choice was rum babas – delicious and conveniently on sale within waddling distance. But boy, did I pay the price for all those empty calories afterwards! If only I had thought more sensibly about what I was consuming.
If you’re at all unsure about whether you’re eating the right thing when trying to conceive, or while pregnant, it’s worth consulting a dietician to get on track.
Recently set up, Surrey Dieticians can help. It offers advice services for before, during and after pregnancy and can also assist with a host of other conditions, including coeliac disease, food intolerances, cholesterol, diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome.
You can be self-referred or referred by your GP. Initial consultations are £90 for an hour, with follow-up appointments at £60.
