Sanofi is launching the Bike Buddies initiative as part of this year's Surrey Classic Bike Ride, offering tandems and adapted bicycles to help cyclists with disabilities take part in the bike challenge alongside a companion
A cycling challenge that sweeps across the beautiful Surrey landscape on June 28, this year's Surrey Classic Bike Ride is sponsored by pharmaceuticals company Sanofi, in support of the Teen Cancer Trust and Sport for Freedom. With four routes of varying length and food and drink (sorry, "nutrition and hydration") provided, it promises to be a great event for everyone from bicycle nuts to families looking for an exciting day out.
Sanofi, however, felt the race still wasn't open to everyone. They've launched a new Bike Buddy scheme, intended to help cyclists with disabilities take part in the ride. Riders can sign up with a volunteer "bike buddy" or bring their own friend or carer, and can apply for a loan tandem or adapted bike from Surrey Wheels for All to complete the race in style.
Matt Hopper is one of the initiative's local celebrity representatives. The Harlequins and former England Saxons rugby player said it was an "amazing idea".
"Sport has played a hugely important part in my life, and allowed me to achieve some incredible goals. Throughout my professional career, teamwork has been key and this campaign is no different. Today, more and more disabled people can participate in physical activities - and this is a great example of how we can help that happen.”
You can get previews of the 15-mile, 55-mile, 85-mile and 100-mile routes online
Entry closes on June 24, so register online soon
