Rhoda with tassel
Pirbright-based Rhoda Nevins, who embroidered the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding dress, will hold a one day Tassel Making Workshop in February
Pirbright-based Rhoda Nevins, a member of the team that embroidered Kate Middleton's wedding dress, is holding a one day Tassel Making Workshop.
Last year she received a call from the Royal School of Needlework asking if she would be interested in a rush job.
“I ended up signing a secrecy agreement and was one of the team who helped to embroider the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding dress" says Rhoda. "I was astonished when I knew what the job was. It was an amazing experience.”
Passionate about embroidery, Rhoda now wants to share her talent with Surrey as well as the Duchess. The basic skills of tassel making using a mould or form will be covered at the new one day course.
“I will demonstrate how to make a key tassel using traditional tassel making techniques and students will make their own on the day" says Rhoda. "Once they’ve acquired the basics, they can then go on to make other exciting tassels. Tassels are invaluable for enhancing the look of curtains and tying drapes back.”
Rhoda has recently started working on a massive project for Runnymede Borough Council to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta. She has designed ten panels, each measuring 24 inches x 33 inches and recruited a team of 12 embroiderers to complete the task by 2015. She has also started work on a huge embroidery 47 inches x 32 inches to mark the 800th anniversary of her local Pirbright Parish Church next year.
The course will take place at Lord Pirbright Hall, Pirbright Village Green, Pirbright, Surrey on Feb 8, 10am-4pm
£65 per person - includes materials and refreshments, but please bring your own lunch.
