Redhill Rangers
Surrey Wildlife Trust (SWT) today announced an exciting new project called ‘Redhill Rangers’, a free scheme that offers young people the opportunity to work with the SWT team!
Aimed at young people between 16 and 25 years of age who are not in work and who live in Redhill and the surrounding areas, the free project will teach young people land-based conservation management skills and give them the opportunity to work with SWT rangers on a variety of reserves including Tilburstow Hill and Spynes Mere.
Participants will shadow ranger directly and take part in various conservation tasks associated with the different habitats you find on SWT reserves, including woodlands and wetlands.
They will be given the appropriate training and personal protective equipment required to use a variety of hand tools.
Course background material will also be provided detailing the ecology of the habitat, the methods being used and how the task will help conserve wildlife.
“This is a really exciting opportunity to gain the skills required to become a countryside ranger" said Community Outreach Officer Laura Ashfield.
"It’s a rare chance to try something new and get a real feel for what it would be like to be a countryside ranger. It’s also a great way of gaining some valuable work experience and an opportunity to try out a career path, which many young people may not have tried before or even knew was an option.”
Free transport to the sites will be provided as well as lunch and refreshments. Participants need to be aged between 16 and 25 years of age, living in the Redhilll area and not employed. This course may be used to support young people undertaking vocational qualifications or A levels. Participants must be available and able to commit to every Thursday in November.
