London Museum of Water and Steam opens, Green Dragon Lane, Brentford
Formerly Kew Bridge Steam Museum, the Victorian visitor attraction reopens this month following a £2.3m redevelopment.
Housing some of the world’s rarest working steam engines still in their original location, the museum shows how the Victorians cleaned up London’s water supply and created the blueprint for the city of today.
In its original (1838) incarnation as Kew Bridge Pumping Station, the building supplied the first constant flow of clean and affordable water directly into Londoners’ homes, helping to combat cholera and make possible the city’s subsequent expansion.
With crawl-through tunnels, walk-through sewers and more, the revamped museum is a dramatic journey through time beneath one of the greatest cities on Earth.
