Making the Connection: Surrey Sculpture Society

A special public participation sculpture event in Guildford has been organised to mark the 20th Anniversary of the Surrey Sculpture Society 

Free to all members of the public who wish to take part, the Making the Connection interactive project with renowned sculptor Julian Wild is being held in honour of Surrey Sculpture Society's 20th birthday.

Using plastic plumber’s tubing and elbow joints, children and adults are encouraged to add to a free flowing drawing that explores the space that it exists in. Making the Connection is made from one continuous line of over 300 metres of tubing. The final artwork is as much about the activity of making as the outcome. Its form is completely dependant on people’s engagement with it.

Making the Connection is a communal sculpture project. It gives people the opportunity to participate in the construction of a large-scale sculpture using low tech, everyday materials and offers an equal opportunity for people of all ages to take part in the activity from under 5’s to the over 60’s.

“We loved the idea of the people of all ages being able to get some fun hands on experience of sculpture" commented Chair of the Surrey Sculpture Society Sue Cundell.

"The idea of bringing people together to create a spontaneous structure has a celebratory appeal  and it is the perfect event to mark our 20th Anniversary.”

Surrey Sculpture Society exhibits the works of both professional and talented amateur sculptors at many major venues such as RHS Wisley, where the society will be staging its 16th annual exhibition throughout September.  The Society’s other exhibition venues this year include also Beaulieu, Loseley Park and Guildford Cathedral.
