Teepee by the Thames! The Thames Young Mariners are offering Saturday sailing school and weekly sports courses in September, Samantha Laurie reports
Kayak by day, camp in a nature reserve by night – all without leaving the city. This year the Thames Young Mariners will again erect teepees on its sweeping riverside site between Richmond and Kingston, enabling those on its sailing, canoeing and multi-activity courses to camp overnight beside its 15-acre lake.
Owned and managed by the outdoor learning department of Surrey County Council, TYM focuses primarily on schools and youth groups, but its holiday courses are highly regarded by local families. From September it will also be offering Saturday Sailing School and a weekly multi-activity course with archery, mountain biking and orienteering, as well as water-based activities.
Two- and three-day multi-activity courses run throughout September: £78/£117, plus £34 for the overnight camp.
