Founder of the camp, Chris Lumley, knows that one of his fondest childhood memories is tinkering with a Mini with his dad. In 2018, Chris decided to set up the Design Build Race to give both girls and boys the opportunity to learn about engineering in a fun but safe environment.
Over the course of five days, children will be able to build their own car, design the bodywork, and finally drive it. Each day, children learn about relevant aspects of science and engineering, such as speed, forces, aerofoils, and gears, through simple hands-on experiments.
Children will be placed into teams of 4 and supervised by 1 tutor. They will then begin to build their own car, design and implement its appearance, and spend two days racing their car against the other teams on the camp. The racing will include straight-speed trails, slaloms, and parking challenges.
On the final afternoon, parents are welcome to come and watch the children race – and may even get a two-minute trial of driving the car (if the children will let them!).
The camps provide a hugely rewarding experience and a unique opportunity for children to learn about engineering, science, and teamwork.
'I believe you should learn almost without noticing, by trying things out and asking why. I’ve designed the experiments and science activities at the camp to capture that sense of joy and wonder. Science is and should be amazing!'
