Cranleigh School rugby sevens champions
Cranleigh School's Under 18 rugby sevens team were crowned national champions last week – fending off competition from Ellesmere, Prior Park, Royal Hospital, Bradford Grammar School and beating Worth School by 19 points to 5 in the final.
“The final was a tight affair but two tries from Bill Bathurst and one from Ben Sackey meant the School returned home with the trophy," said Andy Houston, Director of Rugby at Cranleigh.
"Though we’ve enjoyed great success in rugby this is the first silverware we’ve ever won in this tournament so we are all delighted," Andy continued.
The winning team played a gruelling 10 matches over two days to take the title in the week-long tournament, which featured 160 sides from across the world and 7,000 players.
“With nine out of the 14-man squad returning next year, it was a great achievement from such a young side," he continued.
“Last year we lost in the cup semi-final, so the final whistle was met with jubilant scenes from a vast number of parents, pupils and staff.”
