MP Jeremy Hunt makes first formal visit to Farnham Sixth Form College
Jeremy Hunt, MP for South West Surrey and Secretary of State for Health visited Farnham Sixth Form College on Friday 10 January for his first formal visit to meet Principal Mike Potter CBE and Director of the College Jonathan Stewart.
During the visit the Principal shared his strategic aims and aspirations for the College, alongside his desire for greater integration within the local community and amongst business and social enterprises. Other topics on the agenda were the proposed changes to A Levels, career and university progression, government funding and the needs of the local area.
Mr Hunt congratulated the Principal on the continued high achievements at the College, which last year again enjoyed a 100% A Level and BTEC Diploma pass rate.
Following their meeting the MP for South West Surrey was taken on a short tour of the College and was able to see for himself the recent innovative investments that have been made to improve the already high standard of the facilities. First stop was the new music technology studio, where Mr Hunt took his turn on the drums alongside students who were practising their skills.
Next were the Biology and Chemistry laboratories. Science continues to be a key priority for the College and STEM subjects are particularly important to the Government’s current Skills Agenda. Science is a popular A Level choice at the College and many former students have progressed onto science-related degrees at some of the country’s leading universities including Oxford and Cambridge.
Talking of his visit, Mr Hunt said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Farnham College. Speaking to Mike Potter about his aspirations, it is clear that at the heart of his vision lies his determination for every student to reach their potential through a rigorous and holistic approach. It was great to meet some of the staff and students and view the new facilities and following some great exam results last Summer I wish them all continuing success into the future”.
Principal Mike Potter commented: “I very much enjoyed the opportunity to meet with Mr Hunt and discuss the exciting plans for Farnham Sixth Form College. I look forward to welcoming him back to the College and to forging closer working links in the future”.
