Skaters at Farnham Skatepark received good news earlier this year, when Waverley Borough Council announced that it would be clubbing together with local groups including the Rotary Club of Farnham Weyside, First Wessex Housing, Farnham Town Council and Surrey County Council to set aside £110,000 to fund a radical redesign.
Local skaters had long been clamouring for a rebuild, so when funding emerged to get the project in motion, competition to create the new layout for the park was fierce. After extensive campaigning, Justin Sharp and Jack Micklewright defeated the competition with their design, Freestyle.
Speaking of his win, Jack said he was delighted. "Having grown up skating at the park and being a Farnham local, it means a huge amount to have the chance to work on the redevelopment of the site. It gives us the opportunity to provide the current users of the skatepark and future generations a unique and modern facility for years to come”.
At Farnham’s recent skateboarding competition, NAM JAM, the Mayor of Farnham, Councillor Paddy Blagden handed over a cheque of £500 to add to the steadily accumulating redesign fund. The cheque comes as a result of Farnham Skatepark’s successful application for community grant from Farnham Town Council. The Mayor said he is looking forward to seeing the skatepark when it is completed.
The old park was demolished earlier in the week on Monday to make room for the new design, which will occupy around 200 square meters more than before. The rebuild is scheduled to be completed before the year is out. Watch this space.
