The Women’s Institute along with staff and residents at Huntington House Nursing Home in Surrey have been getting crafty for charity, making beautiful knitted poppies using wool from the Ryland sheep who reside within the grounds of the home.
Huntington House is a family run nursing home whose rural grounds are home to a flock of Ryalnd sheep and New Forest ponies. Each year when the sheep are sheared for summer the directors send the wool to a mill in Devon where it is dyed to poppy red and returned in time for members of the Women's Institute and staff, assisted by residents, to get busy creating knitted poppies to sell for Remembrance Day.
“The knitted poppies are fun to make and the residents enjoy assisting in the creation of these too. It’s fantastic to be able to use the wool from our sheep for an excellent cause. This year we have crafted nearly twice as many poppy’s using our sheep’s wool, they look fantastic and when wearing mine I’m always asked where I got it from.” – Aylith Augier, Customer and Community Liason, Huntington House.
This year Huntington House created double the number of poppies to previous years and have raised around £180 for The Royal British Legion.
