Guildford Editor Nikki Ackerley gets excited about the upcoming Guildford Monopoly board. Residents have until May 31 to make suggestions on what landmarks should make it on to the board

Guildford has beaten Windsor (in a closely fought battle – just 1% between them) in the quest to have its own Monopoly board! Our most famous landmarks are clearly our Cathedral and Castle but what else will appear? We all know that Mayfair and Park Lane are the top places in the original game but will it be between White Lane, Longdown or Halfpenny Lane in the Guildford version? Then again, who wants their road to be the equivalent of the Old Kent Road? I’m amazed at how excited I am that we topped the vote (St Albans was third and Marlow, fourth) although I could be cynical and say it’s a pity it hasn’t come after the new masterplan, as one would hope we will have created new landmarks that also could have been considered by then.
There are of course beauty spots such as Pewley Down, The Chantries, Merrow Downs and Newlands Corner that should feature – not to mention the recreational parks of Stoke Park and Shalford Common. There’s also the issue as to whether fact should merge with fiction and how Alice in Wonderland’s connection with our town could be recognised. Luckily, it appears the choice is down to us residents as having won, we now get to choose what goes on the board.
“Guildford has an abundance of great landmarks from the Castle to the Cathedral so we expect to be very happily spoilt for choice. The original London streets and landmarks like Mayfair and Park Lane could be these much loved landmarks instead,” said Jamie Lamont of the board’s makers, Winning Moves UK.
“Everything is up for grabs,” adds Jamie. “It’s a blank canvas at the moment but by October, Guildford will be immortalised in a board that pays tribute to its rich past, wonderful and vibrant present and prosperous future.”
