The Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Nigel Manning, welcomes the 2017 FIL Rathbones Women’s Lacrosse World Cup to Guildford
More than 25 nations are set to compete in the 10-day event that sees England ranked fourth for the tournament. The team, made up of the country’s best amateur players, takes on fellow home nation rival Wales in the initial match following the opening ceremony, which will be attended by HRH the Princess Royal.
Cllr Paul Spooner, Leader of Guildford Borough Council said: “We are thrilled to support and help sponsor the 2017 Rathbones Women’s Lacrosse World Cup in Guildford. We welcome all the competitors and visitors from around the world, and hope they enjoy their stay in our beautiful, historic borough.”
Teams from Australia, Latvia, New Zealand and Mexico are among those trying to take the crown from the US who have won the title no less than seven times.
“We recently adopted a new Guildford Health and Wellbeing Strategy which places sport and physical activity at its core,” added Cllr Spooner. “We hope that such a prestigious tournament on our doorstep, showcasing the best players in the world, will help inspire a new generation to play sport - and perhaps try something new. Good luck to all the teams! ”
Pool matches will be played until Tuesday July 18. A series of knock out stages will then take place before the final Saturday July 22.
