Why did Zane Gbangbola die? Locals call for answers
The investigation into the death of Zane Gbangbola, who died in Chertsey on Saturday, 8 February, will not result in criminal charges, Surrey Police have said.
On 8 February 2014, a day after his home in Chertsey was hit by severe floods, 7 year old Zane Gbangbola was found dead in his home.
His parents Nicole and Kye were hospitalised in a critical condition. Sadly, Zane was later declared dead at the hospital.
Officials investigated whether Zane’s death was caused by carbon monoxide poisoning, but family, friends and the fire services crew believed that there was evidence to suggest the real cause was hydrogen cyanide.
The toxic gas lurks in unregulated landfill, and can be released from the ground by mixing with floodwater.
“If this was the cause of Zane’s death, then clearly there are issues of public safety that require urgent attention” said Ella Oates, who fronted a campaign 'calling for answers' over Zane's death.
Surrey Police launched an investigation to establish whether any criminal offences had taken place.
While the initial post mortem examination into Zane's death proved inconclusive, the pathologist has now given a result of carbon monoxide intoxication, although this has been disputed by pressure group 'Truth About Zane'..
As part of the investigation a petrol-driven pump was seized from inside the home address at the time of Zane's death.
Enquiries were conducted to 'establish whether there is any liability or criminal offences in respect of the hire company who provided this equipment'.
Officers submitted a file to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for their formal advice. Having received their advice it was determined that there is no criminal case to answer.
Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector James Norbury, said: "The death of seven-year-old Zane was an extremely tragic event and our thoughts remain with his family.
"We have received advice from the Crown Prosecution Service and no criminal charges will be brought in relation to this case.
"The process was lengthy and we fully appreciate it has been a frustrating and painful time for all concerned while enquiries were carried out.
"Officers have met with Zane's parents throughout the investigation and provided as much information as possible at each stage and they have been updated as to the results of our investigation.
"We will now share our findings with Coroner.”
Surrey Police will provide all available evidence to the Surrey Coroner who will carry out an inquest into Zane's death in due course.
