Cyclist who died raising money for children's hospice raises 2000% more than original target

A participant in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 has died, aged just 36.

Kris Cook collapsed at Newlands Corner from a sudden cardiac arrest and, although prompt medical attention was provided by event doctors on the scene, his death was later confirmed after further attempts to revive him at hospital. 

Kris was part of a group of 12 riders raising money for Woking Hospice, and was cycling with his girlfriend Nicola Tait. He had arranged to meet her at the top of the hill, but collapsed shortly after.

His mother said that he had died doing something he loved and welcomed donations in Kris’s memory to his Woking Hospice fundraising page on Just Giving.

Cook had earlier commented: "I have never taken on a challenge such as this. The training has just started and I think it is going to be taking up quite a bit of my time over the coming months. It is great to be raising money for a local charity who provide such a fantastic service to those who need it!"

Donations and tributes flooded in following Kris' death, meaning that he had exceeded his target of £500 by over 2000%, raising a current total of more than £10,000.

"I hope your family & friends can take some comfort in the response from so many people (some of them strangers like myself) & the money that is continuing to be raised in your memory..tragic" commented a donator.

"Kris, No words can describe our feelings right now" said the cyclist's father. "It says everything that you gave your life to help others. See you again one day. Love. Dad. X"

This morning organisers of the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 would expressed their sincere condolences to Kris’s family and friends. His exact cause of death will be established by a post-mortem.
