Motorists have expressed their alarm at being hit by objects when driving along the M23.
In two recent incidents on the M23 motorway near Smallfield and Gatwick Airport, objects were thrown into the stream of live traffic, causing alarm to motorists and damage to vehicles.
On 24 September, a man in his 60s was travelling northbound on this stretch of carriageway at around 4.25pm when an item, possibly a house brick, was dropped on to the carriageway causing a dent to the passenger side door of his car.
The following day (Thursday, 25 September) another road user witnessed smaller items, such as stones, being thrown on to the carriageway in the same area. This occurred at around 7pm and officers were quickly deployed to the scene to investigate.
As well as trying to find those responsible for the offences, Surrey Police are also keen to educate people about the impact their actions can have.
“It is frightening, that for whatever reason, people think it is acceptable to throw objects at moving vehicles" said Investigating officer Sergeant Kevin Simpkins from the Tandridge Safer Neighbourhood Team.
"What may seem like a laugh at the time can quickly escalate into something a lot more serious, people have been killed because of mindless acts like this and we will be doing all we can to find those responsible."
Anyone who can assist with this investigation is urged to contact Surrey Police on 101 quoting reference 45140080975. Information can be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
