The elderly man was walking back from the town centre along the A320 Chertsey Road on Saturday afternoon (December 13) when he was attacked from behind, pushed to the ground, and robbed of his mobile phone and his wallet, containing cash and bank cards.
Officers are appealing for anyone who was in that area between 3pm and 4.30pm to come forward with any information they may have.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Richard Pegden said: "This was a nasty attack which left the victim with head and leg injuries.
"Given the time of day it occurred we hope there may have been many other people in the area. If you were around the A320 Chertsey Road at that time please get in touch.”
