The Mill at Elstead has reopened. Our Food and Drink Editor Catherine Whyte praises the pub that won't give up without a fight!
The Mill at Elstead is back in business after a double dose of bad fortune hit the historic riverside pub over the calamitous festive period. The pub was ravaged by the torrential floodwaters that tore through the Surrey countryside on Christmas Eve, and then hit by an unscrupulous gang of thieves devoid of Christmas spirit, who robbed the landlords of possessions salvaged from the ruined pub – including the landlady’s engagement ring. Bah humbug, indeed.
Demonstrating admirable grit, guts and gumption, landlords Jeff and Georgia Watts refused kowtow to fate and have restored the 300 year-old pub to its former glory – and beyond. There’s even a new glass floor from which punters can peruse the River Wey flowing underneath.
“Running The Mill was a dream come true for us" said the couple. "It’s been a challenging first year but we’re so proud of the pub’s new look and we can’t wait to welcome our customers back.”
So, if ever there was a time to go and show your support for a truly sterling effort, this is it. Time to splash some cash.
