This month’s column, I reveal my favourite purveyors of good quality fish. As a seafood fanatic, I am always on the hunt for fresh crab in order to make one of my favourite meals, Chilli Crab Linguine which is inspired by a dish at The River Café restaurant. You can find the recipe on my website howtocookgoodfood.co.uk.
Here are some of my favourite finds...
Williams & Bunkell Fishmongers – based in Claygate, Surrey:
Established over 30 years ago, it supplies ethically, line caught fish and shellfish from small, independent fishing boats.
Veasey & Sons – situated in Forest Row, East Sussex:
This award-winning fish shop offers high quality, responsibly caught fish. Its products can also be found at local food markets such as Priory Farm (Fri/Sat) and Flower Farm Shop, Ockley (Fri/Sat).
Tillingbourne Farm & Smokery – a family run business based in Abinger Hammer famous for its smoked and fresh trout:
You can fish for your own trout too which makes for a fun family day out.
Albury Estate Fisheries – set in a stunning location within the Surrey Hills:
Albury village is home to The Albury Estate of which the fisheries is one component. Here, you can fish for your own trout or order as much as you need. They are also suppliers of crayfish, which are delicious served simply with garlic butter, lemon and some homemade wheaten soda bread.
Sandy’s Fishmongers – if you are local to Twickenham, then Sandy’s is the place to buy your fresh fish:
Established in 1977, Ray Sandy’s shop forms an integral part of the community and offers fantastic customer service plus fresh meat as well as fish.
