Exercising around the House in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice: The Role of Walks and Dances
Women were largely confined to the home in Pride and Prejudice (as in Austen’s other novels) Walking and dancing were two important forms of exercise for them but had other functions in the novel. This course will examine how Austen presents dancing and walking in the context of Pride and Prejudice, focusing on balls, dance partners, dance etiquette and Elizabeth’s controversial walk to Netherfield Park.
Keen readers are welcome and this course assumes no former study of Pride and Prejudice. Time: 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
