Ewell Village Fair is one of the major events on the Ewell calendar. Mounted by St. Mary's church it provides a day of fun and relaxation for visitors, an opportunity for St. Mary's folk to engage with other local residents and a chance to raise funds to support all aspects of St. Mary's, from the continuation of Christian worship in Ewell to the maintenance of the beautiful Victorian church in the heart of the village.
Back by popular demand in 2015 is the Southern Golden Retriever Society Display Team, they have not been at the fair for a few years and it will good to see sixteen beautiful golden retrievers performing a number of obedience routines to music.
Other skills will be demonstrated by Handsdown Martial Arts, 323 (Epsom & Ewell) Squadron Air Training Corps, Claro Fitness Zumba, and the Ewell St. Mary's Morris Men with their guest sides Box Hill Bedlam, Kingston Morris, Phoenix Clog Dancers, and Thames Valley Morris Men, several very different styles of 'Morris'.
If your preference is for musical entertainment listen out for the Divas Choir and Fitznells Concert Band. We haven't forgotten the children; Mickey and Minnie Mouse will be joining us, Punch and Judy are set to perform, and Ready Steady Go Kids will be in the main arena mid afternoon.
There is a children's baking competition (details and an entry form on the church web site), bouncy slide, ball pit, pony rides and a scavenger hunt. With a coconut shy, bottle tombola, and other traditional sideshows none of the family will have time to be bored.
All this activity is bound to stimulate your appetite so make sure you call in on the beer pavilion where you can slake your thirst with a cool beer, Pimms, or soft drink. Elsewhere tea and coffee will be on offer throughout the day, and you will find a range of lunch dishes prepared and served by students from NESCOT College in the church hall opposite the church lych gate. You will also find a well stocked barbecue, Indian food, pancakes and crêpes, sandwiches and cakes in the fair itself, again there is special provision for children who can be treated to a children's lunch bag. Ice cream is for all ages!
Please leave time to visit the various stalls packed with bargains from books to bric-a-brac and travel goods to toys as well as the ever popular cakes, plants and jewellery. One of our major fund raising activities is our annual Grand Draw, if you have already bought tickets don't forget to return your cash and the counterfoils, if you have yet to purchase tickets, and stand a chance of winning the £200 first prize they are £1 each from the Grand Draw stall.
In amongst the stalls and sideshows are stands representing many of Ewell's other activities, there is a lot going on in the village throughout the year and this is a chance to find out more about our local organisations
Copies of the programme can be downloaded from www.stmarysewell.com or collected from the church or Bourne Hall Library. Entrance to the fair is £2.50, payable on the gate, with children under 16 admitted free of charge.
Ewell Village Traders have pledged their support of the fair and are mounting a village day with the theme 'Dancing in the Street'. Ewell High Street will be closed to give access to various dance forms throughout the day, and there will be a range of extra activities, offers and promotions throughout the village. As well as demonstrations from several dance studios entertainment will include a children's roundabout, Rock Choir, and Glyn Boys' Sax Quartet. The Epsom bee keepers will also be open, find them behind the Upper Mill on the river.
The day starts outside the Famous Green Man at 10am with a spectacular display of Dance by the Ewell St. Mary's Morris Men, and four very different guest sides Box Hill Bedlam, Kingston Morris, Phoenix Clog Dancers, and Thames Valley Morris Men; the Morris Dancers process to the eighteenth century watch house in Church Street to 'refresh the wastrel' before moving on to the fair at Ewell Castle School's Glyn House site. From then on there will be activity throughout the day both within the fair and in the High Street, until 3.30 when Rt. Hon. Chris Grayling MP draws the winning tickets in the Grand Draw, the lucky programme is drawn and the Ewell Village Traders’ Draw for £100 M&S voucher will take place in the fair.
