The Department of Politics and the Centre for International Intervention nat the University of Surrey organises a public lecture by the Australian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom: The Honourable Alexander Downer. Previously Mr Downer has served as the Australian Foreign Minister (1996-2007) and as the United Nations Special Adviser to the General-Secretary on Cyprus (2008-2014). In these capacities he has been deeply engaged in the Bougainville and Cyprus peace processes. As a diplomat he also served in the Australian Mission to the European Union and the Australian Representation to NATO. Mr Downer will reflect on Australia’s role in the Asia-Pacific and Australian-British relations in the context of the new US administration and Brexit.
