With a season of summer events ahead, not to mention the possibilities of weddings and christenings, you may well be in need of a hat – and if that is the case, there’s no better destination than Tit for Tat in Paved Court, Richmond. The shop, which was opened by experienced milliner Mary Spiteri back in 1998, offers couture as well as ready to wear items and can cater for all your headwear needs from a family occasion, to a picnic at Buckingham Palace, a sojourn in tropical climes or even to a cosy fedora or beanie for winter weather. And, thanks to the lovely Mary, who is passionate about finding the right headpiece for every customer, readers of the magazine can win £250 to put towards a hat of their choice.
Tips for choosing a hat
- When choosing a hat, choose it for the person you want to be, not necessarily are.
- Always think of your silhouette as a whole, hats can be an amazing style statement so make sure your dress does not fight with your headwear.
- Always take your outfit with you when choosing a hat
- If wearing a cocktail hat, make sure it sits above your right eye
- If you're not wearing your hair up, make sure to keep it off your face
- Try on as many hats as possible, start with the biggest and gradually get smaller
- Don't be scared to experiment
