On average we spend approximately fifteen seconds looking at a painting in a collection or exhibition. In this course we will aim to analyse six paintings in depth: Bruegel’s Netherlandish Proverbs (1559), Vermeer’s Mistress and Maid (1666-68), Ingres’ The Valpinçon Bather (1808), Courbet’s The Artist’s Studio (1854-55), Tom Thomson’s Northern River (1914-15) and Anslem Kiefer’s Athanor (2007).
