There's plenty going on at Richmond's newest art space

One Paved Court, a new artist-run contemporary art space in Richmond is the vision of a group of local artists, providing art space and the opportunity for artists to show work uncompromised by commercial constraints. As an artistic brief, it's something that is more common in East London, where the three artists that run One Paved Court met, while studying Fine Art at the Cass in Whitechapel.
"We aim to attract a wide range of artists, many of whom have been unable to show their work due to the commercial demands of most galleries," explains founder Kate Proudman. "This enables us to show a wide range of innovative work, which will both challenge and engage visitors."
An important part of the One Paved Court vision is to forge links with the artistic community in Richmond, with regular artist’s talks and workshops enabling visitors and collectors to interact directly with the artists whose works are on display.
Since opening in June 2017, One Paved Court has hosted, as promised, a varied programme of exhibitions featuring everything from painting and sculpture to a collaborative show about migration. Full details of past and forthcoming shows and details of opening times are available at onepavedcourt.co.uk.
In a lane of early Georgian shops off Richmond Green, One Paved Court has had a varied past – from home to a surgical appliance maker and carpet shop. It remained derelict for years until it was was restored by two of the gallery directors to create a small gallery and studio above. The new studio is home to the resident artists.
"We stripped out the 1970s additions, and repaired the fabric of the building, leaving exposed elements such as the half-timber-and-brick party wall and a brick archway which once connected to a rear yard," says Kate.
The finished space is light, modern, with layers of history. New interventions are kept as few as possible, planes of clean, white ceilings and wall panels for hanging, together with high spec. gallery lighting.
