Kingston, October 2025 — London Square, the award-winning developer owned by Aldar, has announced the purchase of the Grade II*-listed County Hall in Kingston upon Thames. The acquisition brings to London Square a landmark building rich in heritage and prime for high-end residential redevelopment.
The sprawling 5.2-acre site — previously serving as the headquarters for Surrey County Council — includes the main listed County Hall building along with ancillary structures and courtyard areas. The site had been owned since 2021 by RER London, and planning permission already exists for the building’s refurbishment, restoration and extension to deliver 292 homes (256 private and 36 affordable) alongside approximately 4,408 m² of commercial space.
Adam Lawrence, CEO of London Square, said:
“County Hall Kingston is an impressive landmark which has stood empty for many years. We are delighted to have been chosen to bring new life to this beautiful building. Once restored and converted into elegant homes, County Hall Kingston will become a unique offering for those looking to make this sought-after Royal borough their home.”
London Square brings to the project substantial experience in converting historic buildings. Previous restoration projects under its belt include the transformation of the Star and Garter Building in Richmond Hill, the former Branston Pickle Factory and tannery in Bermondsey, and the restoration of Toynbee Hall in East London.
The development is well positioned: located just a short walk from Kingston’s town centre and the Thames, the site is within fifteen minutes’ walk of Kingston station (with direct services to London Waterloo in about 29 minutes) and close to major road links including the A3 and M25. The Kingston area has attracted significant investment recently — more than £1.5 billion in new developments in the last two years alone — and has seen major corporate relocations, including Unilever’s decision to consolidate its global headquarters in the town.
London Square views this acquisition as its ninth major project in the capital over the next decade. Other recent sites secured include Westminster Tower opposite the Houses of Parliament, Tite Street in Chelsea, and developments in Vauxhall, Woolwich, Stratford Cross, Willesden, and Twickenham.
