Rod Boreham

Rod Boreham, the founder of the Guildford Street Angels project, has been nominated by volunteer Louise Kenyon for his “tireless service to the community”
Guildford’s first Town Centre Chaplain, Rod established Street Angels a decade ago to assist those who find themselves in a vulnerable situation during the course of the night. Practical support is the aim, coupled with a calming, non-judgemental presence.
The ‘Angels’ – who, thanks to Rod’s hard work, now number 130 – patrol the streets of Guildford from around 11 pm into the early hours, carrying out every task from reuniting lost revellers to providing food and assistance for the homeless. They are there every Friday and Saturday, whatever the weather, to lend a compassionate ear. You’ll find them clearing broken glass from outside bars or handing out flip flops to partygoers who have become separated from their shoes. So far, more than 50,000 people have received help from Rod and his team.
“I am moved and humbled to receive this fabulous award,” says Rod. “There are so many vulnerable people needing support.
“It has been such a privilege to serve the town as Chaplain, whether by talking to the homeless on our streets, being a peacemaker in midnight brawls or ensuring youngsters get home safely. None of this would have been possible without our brilliant team of volunteer Angels, who are selfless in giving their time to care for others. I am delighted to accept this award on their behalf.”
Rod has also worked tirelessly to raise money for the project. His most recent undertaking was to lead a record-breaking sponsored relay climb of the tower of Guildford Cathedral: he and 44 supporters collectively clocked up 200,000 steps in ascending and descending the tower. Rod himself, now 70, achieved an impressive 13 ascents – equivalent to 220 flights of stairs. The team raised a stunning £10,500.
“Rod has been the local hero for many Guildford people over the past decade,” says Louise Kenyon. “The project has become part of the fabric of the town and Rod is largely responsible for its success. He has been inspirational in building a real community of volunteers. Without a doubt a deserving recipient of this award.”
