The Kingston team behind keepkidsconnected (KKC) passed the 200th device mark in their initiative to donate free laptops to children in local schools across the Kingston community.
This is a huge milestone in KKC's efforts to help families that need devices so that their children can keep up with their school studies and homework.
KKC has donated free laptops to over 20 different primary and secondary schools across the borough, including Kings Oak Primary, Knollmead Primary, Dysart, St Joseph’s Primary and Southborough Secondary schools.
The COVID 19 lockdown highlighted the fact that many children in Kingston have no access to a device on which to engage in their distance learning and keepkidsconnected is helping to close this digital divide.
The team are looking for laptops and tablets that are in good working condition and less than 10 years old. KKC erase the hard disk data, refurbish the device and essentially turn it into a Chromebook.
KCC then provide the laptops free to the schools that have identified children who need them.
The KKC team has had great support from the community and all the fantastic laptop donors, but also from Kingston’s local MP, Ed Davey. Mr Davey took receipt of 10 refurbished laptops on behalf of Hollyfield Secondary School.
These laptops will be given to children in the school who do not have access to a device on which to engage in their home learning.
Ed Davy said “Keep Kids Connected is inspirational and exactly what the community needs now. If you have a spare laptop hanging around please let them have it - it could change a child’s life”.
