Affecting around 80-90% of women, cellulite is an incredibly common problem. Despite being prevalent, it can be quite tricky to treat as it has multiple causes. Fear not though, for the Light Touch Clinic team has put together some useful tips to help you smooth and tone no matter the time of year...
Isn’t cellulite just fat?
One of the biggest misconceptions of cellulite is assuming that it is simply excess fat. Whilst fat certainly plays a role in cellulite formation, cellulite has multiple causes including poor circulation and changes to collagen structure. Unfortunately, this means that individuals of all shapes and sizes are susceptible.
The root of the problem
One of the main causes of cellulite is damage to the collagen fibres in the skin. Often referred to as the skin’s glue, collagen is responsible for keeping skin firm and supple. After the age of about 30, our body stops naturally making new collagen, while other factors like photodamage and smoking can cause premature collagen damage. In addition, shortened connective tissues can create a dimpling effect on the surface of the skin. Poor circulation and lymphatic drainage can also cause metabolic waste to build up in the skin, which contributes to cellulite.
Fat does play some part in the formation of cellulite. Fat cells expand when we put on weight which can put pressure on the skin, producing a rippled appearance on the surface.
Why is cellulite less common in men?
You may have noticed that cellulite is significantly more prevalent in women than it is in men. This is due to the fact that men and women have different patterns of connective bands within the skin. Women have vertical bands whereas men have stronger bands in a criss-cross pattern. This extra strong bond means that men are less likely to see the dimpling effects of cellulite.
OK, so how do we fix it?
As you can see, cellulite can be complicated to treat as it has a number of causes. Therefore, it is important that we take a multi-faceted approach.
Whilst cellulite is not exclusively caused by excess fat, staying fit and active can certainly help improve the appearance of cellulite, not to mention your overall health. Try to incorporate a mix of cardio and strength exercises into your weekly routine and maintain a balanced diet.
Taking care of your skin is another way to help improve the appearance of cellulite. Whilst, sadly, there is no magic cream which will completely smooth away dimpling, creams that improve skin texture such as the retinol-packed ZO Body Emulsion can help. In addition, make sure you protect your skin when you are out in the sun to prevent premature collagen damage as this can exacerbate the problem of cellulite.
Body brushing can also help as this sloughs away dead skin cells for softer skin and aids lymphatic drainage. At the Light Touch Clinic we often recommend this to patients who want to boost the results of their cellulite treatments at home.
See a professional: there are a number of non-surgical treatments out there which can help improve the appearance of cellulite. We’re particularly fond of BTL Unison at the Light Touch Clinic as it is FDA approved and tackles the multiple causes of cellulite – not just the symptoms. This treatment uses radio frequency and cellutone technology to promote the production of collagen in the skin whilst boosting circulation and lymphatic drainage.
