get rid of acne fast
Whilst acne is primarily associated with teenagers, adult acne is incredibly common too with around 60% of adults affected by the condition. Fortunately, we have the solutions to help!
What causes acne?
Clogged pores are at the heart of acne.
These follicles can become blocked when the sebaceous glands produce too much oil which mixes with dead skin cells to form a plug. This is how the classic whiteheads and blackheads we associate with acne are created.
To make things worse, bacteria on the skin which is usually harmless can infect the blocked follicles to cause more inflamed, severe acne such as papules and cysts.
Q. If acne is caused by blocked pores does that mean I need to clean my face more often?
Definitely not! While it may be tempting to repeatedly wash your face in a bid to keep oil production at bay, this will likely just aggravate your skin. Washing your face once in the morning and doing a double cleanse in the evening is plenty.
Q. What products should I use?
When choosing a cleanser for acne-prone skin look out for a foaming formula containing salicylic acid. This is a beta hydroxy acid which means that it can penetrate oil on the skin, making it effective for clearing out blocked pores.
You can still wear makeup if you have acne, but be selective about your base. Choose a formula which is oil-free and look for makeup which is non-comedogenic as this means that it will not clog your pores.
Q. Does picking and popping make things worse?
Of course. No matter how tempted you may be, do not pick or squeeze your spots. Though you may relieve the contents of a pimple, you may introduce infection or cause further damage to the skin.
Q. When should I see a professional?
If your acne is severe or persistent, you should consider going to see a professional.
INTRAcel is our go-to treatment at the clinic for patients with acne and we see incredible results on both acne and acne scarring. This treatment combines radiofrequency heat energy with micro-needling to tackle the causes of acne.
As mentioned earlier, excessive oil production and bacteria on the skin are two of the main causes of acne. Micro-needling and radiofrequency heat energy work in tandem to regulate oil production and destroy acne bacteria. This not only helps clear up current breakouts but protects against future ones too.
As if to add insult to injury, the scars that acne leaves behind can be tricky to treat with topical treatments alone. However, INTRAcel can help with this as the treatment stimulates your body’s natural production of collagen and elastin. This helps to plump out indented scars and evens skin texture for smoother skin.
Most patients will need a course of 3 treatments and will be given a bespoke skincare regime to aid their results. Unlike products on the high street, we offer cosmeceutical and, if needed, prescription skincare. These products are more potent than those on the high street and are hand-picked for your skin which means that they can yield superior results.
By combining a course of INTRAcel with Obagi skin care, our medical aestheticians achieved this excellent result for one of our patients.
