Modern and traditional. Vintage and contemporary. They may sound like strange bedfellows. But for many, the ideal way to fill a room is with an eclectic mix of furnishings that fit together to create authentic, multi-layered and fascinating spaces. However, mixing and pairing contemporary furnishings with more traditional styles can be a daunting task, even for the most seasoned decorator or designer. So how do you accomplish such a feat, without your rooms coming out looking like a mess?
First off, styling eclectic rooms still means observing basic design rules. There's a fine line between layered, interesting and collected to busy and distracting. You therefore need to be careful to restrict the number of contrasting styles in one room to avoid things feeling random. Once you decide on a mix that works for you it’s then important to carry the theme throughout your home otherwise the change can be jarring.
Taupe and jewelled colours are very much in vogue at the moment as are the material contrasts of metal and wood. Mid-century furniture is still high on the list of Interior Design favourites and there this is a growing trend toward Bohemian velvets and botanical prints.
Remember that eclectic style is characterized by a variety of fabrics and patterns, with decorative accents like rugs, paintings, objects d'art, and throw pillows being an easy and convenient way to bring a considered mismatch into any room.
As always quality always shines through but with an eclectic mix it’s easier to blend high value items with less expensive car boot and vintage fayre finds to create a cohesive and compelling interior. But balance and symmetry are still important considerations. On this basis styles and eras can be blended more effectively by matching line, contour and shape.
Whilst it may be difficult to visualise how designing your home to echo new trends would work design magazines and design shows are a great resource for ideas. Looking at room sets and layouts helps to spark your imagination and should give you the confidence to be bold.
