Make Ready are an initiative offering outdoor education for both children and adults, through activities, parties and education programmes. Their Holiday Day Camps run from 22-26th October and from 29th October-2nd November and are set in woodland fields in Surrey. The camps aim to encourage children aged 8-14 to spend their half-term outdoors by offering a range of fun activities including archery, laser tag, shelter building and crafts. Rob Martin, Make Ready’s Director, and his partner decided to create the organization after experiencing first-hand the great benefits of building relationships within a natural environment.
“Having been a teacher for 20 years and a Head of Year for 10, I was struck by the positive impact good relationships have on children's wellbeing, confidence and behaviour. We wanted to bring children to the great outdoors and to give them memories to last a lifetime. Having two boys of my own I wanted them to experience days spent in woodland far removed from screens and phones. To this end we ban all devices form the camp.
Each day on the camp runs from 8.30am to 5.30pm, and – weather permitting – the entire day will be spent outside. If the worst does happen and the weather turns, shelter is available to retreat to and activities will be adapted accordingly. ” - Rob Martin
Although typically an active day, Rob also recognizes the need for occasional downtime, and there is always a quiet area for any children in need of a break to retreat to. With safety, inclusivity and the comfort of every child at the forefront of their plan, every day at the camp is different, adapted to the children attending that day.
“We usually have an equal mix of boys and girls each day. With years of experience of working with young people, we bring out the best in each of them. It is very often the case that they come for a day and stay for the week.”
A day camp built on such a simple yet important premise is inevitably also successful with parents as well as children, particularly for those in search of a half term camp with a difference.
Rob says: “We have in the past received only positive comments from parents who love the idea of their kids playing and learning together.”
