We interview Surrey dog lover Penelope Malby, owner of Penelope Malby Photography in Tadworth
Q. What’s special about working with animals?
A. It's very rewarding. It shows in the photos when an animal is happy relaxed and confident.
and I feel very privileged to be able to spend my life being creative, and working with animals at the same time.
Q. How do you get naughty pets to cooperate?
A. There's no such thing as naughty, just an animal who doesn't really understand what you want them to do. I use food treats and toys to lure animals into the right position and reward them for staying there just for a few seconds.
Q. Do you do most shoots at your studio or do you prefer to be on location?
A. A bit of both really - I suppose mostly I shoot in my studio, purely because it's more controllable in terms of weather, light, and you don't get other people and their animals appearing in the background! I also find that a lot of owners want a studio look as it's more modern and 'cleaner'.
Q. What locations in Surrey are good for photographing pets?
A. There are loads of wonderful locations I've used in Surrey. Banstead Woods is a favourite in the spring because of the amazing bluebells.
Q. Do you have a favourite park?
A. Banstead Woods, Epsom Downs and Farthing Downs are all wonderful locations.
Q. Are your Christmas shoots more fun than the others?
A. Yes definitely! I love a bit of sparkle!
Q. Which one of your own dogs is the biggest poser?
A. Morris the pointer cross setter, he's quite an anxious dog out of the house, but in my studio he's an absolute pro. I always test new concepts and lighting with him.
Q. Do you buy your dogs Christmas presents? Of course I do! Are they a big part of your Christmas?
A. Yes definitely. They have turkey for their tea and even more cuddles than usual!
Q. Anything else you want to tell us?
A. I've just spent a couple of days photographing rabbits, that was such a fun experience, cute little fluffy bunnies. My fridge has still got 18 lettuces in it! I'm always up for a challenge!
