Did you know approximately 2.4 million people between the ages of 45-64 live alone? But the highest number of women living alone are aged 75+ with figures reaching 1.3 million. If that doesn't shock you enough, half of the people who are 85 years and older live by themselves within their communities.
Therefore, it comes as no surprise that many of these older people say they feel lonely, separate and almost isolated. And for some, residential homes are not even an option. Many face the struggle of letting go of their independence and the homes they've spent their lives in, making memories and raising a family.
But this month, we can all do something to bring happiness to the elderly by just taking the time to be with them. And it couldn't come at a better time. Because this month, thousands of people will take part in Silver Sunday. It's a national day of events that celebrate older people and help to combat loneliness and social isolation amongst them.
The event has had a lot of positive results in the past as last year 84% of the older residents said that Silver Sunday helped them to feel part of the community. While 97% said they found out about new services that were available to them that they did not previously know about. That's why this day is essential because it raises awareness and shows the elderly that there is a lot more on offer and available to them.
"lt is so important that older people feel included in London’s communities. That is why I support Silver Sunday and hope that you all have a wonderful time celebrating the valuable contributions that older people make. These contributions span not just London but up and down the UK. In a city as large as London there is no need for older people to ever feel lonely or isolated but sadly some do. As Mayor, I want to make sure that everyone is engaged and active in their community – young or older." Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London
The day will see hundreds of events across the country in October to give older people an opportunity to meet new friends, mingle and have fun with a mixture of events. In Reigate & Banstead, the borough's Living and Ageing Well campaign are celebrating its sixth birthday. And as in previous years, leisure centres, community spaces and local groups across the borough will be offering free trials and celebratory events for older residents.
What Can You Do?
While the organization understands that not everyone can run and organize their own events, they do hope that people will volunteer on the day and help them do something special.
Their Find An Event page gives you a list of all the activities being held in your local area as well as contact information so you can get in touch with them directly.
