This month, Windsor will play host to a festival of the best British food and drink. Alice Cairns finds out more

Great news for local food lovers: Windsor is about to get its very own food festival. Launching this August Bank Holiday weekend, the Windsor Food Festival will be held in Alexandra Gardens, on the banks of the River Thames. Best of all, it’s completely free to attend!
The festival brings together the very best British food producers from around the country – think buttery flapjacks from Devon, gin from Guildford, garlic from the Isle of Wight and bar snacks from Maidenhead. With exhibitors coming from as far afield as sunny Cornwall, you can line your cupboards with the tastiest food that England has to offer – all without leaving central Windsor.
Discerning tipplers are also in for a treat; there’ll be complex gin cocktails, a beer tent crammed with beers from local breweries, and wine tastings run by British wine producers. You’ll learn all about colour, body and fragrance, and what to look for when you’re choosing your next bottle.

If you fancy a bite to eat, you won’t be disappointed; street food vendors will be offering a dizzying array of burgers, wraps, curries, Thai food, sizzling sausages and vegan treats. You can satisfy your sweet tooth with fresh churros, or graze on coffee and cakes.
Once you’ve stocked up on artisanal food and drink, you might want some tips on how to combine them into a delicious meal. The marquee will be home to expert demonstrations, with chefs coming from Stoke Park, Caldesi in Campagna, Windsor Grill and Cliveden House, among others. They’ll demonstrate techniques, share their tips and tricks, and endeavour to solve your cooking conundrums. There’ll also be an in-show bookshop, selling cookery books and specialist titles. To top it all off, there’ll be live music throughout the day, played by local bands and orchestras. A cold drink, an artisanal nibble, a riverside wander and a castle view - what better way to pass a summer’s day?
