With an excellent selection of craft beer, sparking choice of G&T and impressive variety of food, The Tap Tavern is a welcome addition to Richmond's High Street, says Fiona Adams

It’s official: the Tap Tavern is one of my new favourite spots in Richmond. Situated in Princes Street, just two minutes from the back entrance of Waitrose, it is ideally placed for a spot of after-work drinks, after-shopping snacking, late-night drinks … anything really. Close to the train and bus stations, the travel links are just five minutes’ away but it is its general feel – friendly but cool, different yet familiar – that makes it so appealing for a quick pop-in or a longer linger.
The Tap is divided into three, with a bar, including tables and stools, a smallish eating area and an upstairs function room for private parties. It is less a pub and more a bar and dining room, offering microbrew beers (there are around 20 taps behind the bar) as well as a wide variety of gins (and a diverse G&T menu, including one from Japan) as well as a menu of shared platters, main plates and currently two Scotch eggs (one for carnivores, one for veggies, the latter with curry overtones).
This is one of the big pluses about the Tap Tavern: it caters for all eaters and the choices are eclectic and original. Yes, you can get steak and chips and market fresh fish, but you can also enjoy whole baked camembert with sourdough bread, ginger and onion jam (seriously good), vegan salad, as well as the lightest pistachio, orange and raspberry cake and a cheeky pretzel and nuts chocolate brownie.
On the evening I visited, Holly Tucker co-founder of Not On the High Street was also there and loved it – if you needed any more convincing that The Tap is the height of good taste, surely the seal of approval of a local entrepreneur renowned for finding new talent must be it.
