Happy Birthday Mr Shakespeare!
14-28 April 2019 Guildford Shakespeare Company return with another series of events staged around Guildford to celebrate William Shakespeare’s 455th Birthday: WILL’S BIRTHDAY BASH
This year WILL’S BIRTHDAY BASH opens with the YOUNG COMPANY’s performances (14-15 April), who have been given special permission to stage their show in the historic Guildhall on Guildford High Street. The performance, entitled LOVE & WONDER, is devised by the company of 12-18-year olds and is based on three of the plays GSC staged in 2018: Romeo & Juliet, Love’s Labour’s Lost and Alice in Wonderland. “Really uplifting and the whole group perform so brilliantly it's hard to remember they are not professionals… yet!” Audience Member, 2018
On 24 April there will be a special staged reading of Shakespeare’s rarely staged history play KING JOHN. Written around 1595-97, at the same time as Romeo & Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, this is a gripping story of illegitimacy, war, power struggles and one of the most beautiful speeches ever written about motherhood. Interestingly, the one thing King John is most known for, Magna Carta, is not mentioned!
Celebrations come to a close with the 8th SONNET WALK WEEKEND (27-28 April), and this year they are back in Guildford town centre. Like a treasure hunt, timed groups set off with a map, to discover Shakespeare in the most unexpected of places. As usual the route will be kept under wraps until the actual weekend. This event always sells out in advance.
