Wide Sargasso Sea and the Landscape of Colonialism in 19th Century Jamaica
Inspired by Jane Eyre, Jean Rhys’ novel gives a voice to ‘the mad woman in the attic’. It tells the story of a marriage between a young Creole heiress to a wealthy gentleman, and her subsequent ‘madness’. Rhys’ novel beautifully evokes the sensuality of both Antoinette and Jamaica.
This discussion-led class will explore ideas about madness, colonialism and feminism.
Please read the book beforehand (Penguin Classics).
